A Comprehensive Guide to Epictetus
Epictetus is one of the great philosophers of Stoicism, an ancient philosophy that focused on reason, contentment, and self-control. He was born a slave in a Greek city, traveled with his master to Rome, studied under a Stoic senator, and was later freed. While we don’t have access to anything Epictetus wrote himself, we do have recordings of his views and quotations of his thoughts from those who knew him.
On this website you’ll find popular quotations of Epictetus, the biography of Epictetus, the definition of Stoicism, a review of Letters From a Stoic, as well as resources such as links to other webpages on Epictetus, Seneca, and other Stoic thinkers.
This website was launched in 2011 to provide a resource for those looking to learn more about the biography of Epictetus, the philosophy of Stoicism, Epitetus’ views on politics, friendship, psychology, happiness, and to provide reviews of books that discuss such topics. Feel free to browse the pages and to “share” a link to this website on Facebook or Twitter. To learn more about this website, read my about page.
As you read this website, remember to make the best use possible of the information here, to dedicate yourself to a life of reason, take responsibility for your own state of mind, and remember the words of Epictetus: “From now on, then, resolve to live as a grown-up who is making progress, and make whatever you think best a law that you never set aside.”
